Portuguese companies respond to the United Nations call to action to combat climate change

Recently presented by the United Nations Global Compact and signed by several business leaders, “Business Ambition for 1.5ºC” is an initiative that holds companies responsible worldwide for setting emission reduction goals and objectives to achieve zero net emissions until 2050 and limit global warming to 1.5ºC by 2030.

The “Business Ambition for 1.5ºC” signing ceremony, which was attended by Lise Kingo, CEO and Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact, was one of the highlights of the International Conference “Making Global Goals Local Business – Iberia”, which took place, on November 6th, at Culturgest, Lisbon. This United Nations Global Compact initiative, which is being promoted in several countries, has now arrived in Portugal.

EDP and Scoop – which were the first Portuguese companies to take on this “Business Ambition for 1.5ºC” pledge, last September within the scope of the Climate Summit in New York – have now joined by 21 other organizations (19 Portuguese and two Spanish). Quidgest among them.

The document encourages organizations to truly commit themselves to preserving the planet, demanding a commitment to concrete goals that must be achieved in terms of reducing the emission of greenhouse gases, essential to stop global warming. Achieving the transition to a low carbon economy and avoiding overheating the atmosphere are its main objectives.
