Letter to the women of today, who will embrace technology tomorrow*
As you learn about and venture into the world of technology, I want to share with you not just words of strength and encouragement but also a realistic look at the challenges you may encounter along the way. As a woman leading a tech company with strong female representation (43%), I believe being prepared is the first step to success.
Here are four significant challenges many women face in tech careers. The good news? All of them can be overcome!
1. Female underrepresentation: In many tech environments, women are still a minority. This can result in feelings of isolation, lack of confidence, and the sense that you must constantly prove your worth. The lack of female role models can also make it difficult for you to envision a successful career path.
How to overcome? Look for support groups, such as women in technology networks, inside and outside your university or workplace. These communities offer a safe space for sharing experiences, mentorship, emotional support, and practical advice. Participation in these groups can also provide networking opportunities, workshops, and specific projects essential for professional and personal growth.
2. Gender stereotypes: Despite the progress witnessed over the last few decades, gender stereotypes persist, potentially influencing expectations of what women can or cannot do and achieve in technology. These preconceived ideas can undermine your self-esteem, performance, and long-term career success.
How to overcome? Stand firm in your abilities and work to prove these stereotypes completely wrong. Celebrate your achievements, and don’t be afraid to voice your opinion. Your competence, determination, and passion for technology will speak volumes.
3. Continuous skill updating: The rapidly changing technological landscape demands continuous adaptation and the development of new skills, which can be incredibly challenging in an environment where women already face several other barriers.
How to overcome? Adopt a mindset of continuous learning. Engage in online training and workshops, attend conferences, and connect with tech communities. This way, you can stay updated on the latest trends and build a support network with other professionals facing similar challenges. Consider adaptability and resilience as a competitive advantage.
4. Unconscious biases: Unconscious bias (an attitude that affects our understanding and actions unconsciously or unintentionally) can influence hiring decisions, performance evaluations, and promotions, often to the detriment of women. This can limit women’s access to equal growth and career development opportunities.
How to overcome? Make yourself heard. Actively participate in meetings, share your suggestions, and work to make your presence known. Seek mentors and peers who can help you pave the way and advocate for your potential.
Although these challenges may seem daunting, remember that each represents an opportunity to grow, learn, and lead by example. Your journey in technology can inspire the next generation of women and girls in tech.
As Fei-Fei Li, Professor, Computer Scientist, and Co-Director of the Stanford Human-Centered AI Institute said, “If we are trying to shape a technological world that truly serves humanity, technology also needs to be shaped by all people.” Remember: you are part of those people.
Let’s change the narrative together and create a future where gender equality in technology is the norm, not the exception!
With great admiration and wishes for a brilliant tech career,
Cristina Marinhas, CEO of Quidgest
